Christian Bale’s Weight Loss for The Machinist

At first glance, you would be surprised at why someone living in the western world could be so lean.  Could the person be suffering from a sickness associated with anorexia or could he be a victim of abuse or a pious man fasting hard?   More questions start filling up the mind leading to scary conclusions but when the real truth sets in, one can’t help to wonder why and how someone could do such a thing to his body.  Christian Bale’s weight loss took everyone by surprise and sparked great debates in several platforms around the world.  He did all this to play the title role in The Machinist, a 2004 psychological thriller movie that registered over 8 million dollars at the Home Box Office commonly known as HBO.

But loosing 63 pounds just to act in a movie is insane by almost all standards.  Even if it was for the sake of ambition, justifying this life-threatening move is almost impossible.  Others could easily view it as suicidal depending on his health condition at the time, but despite all these, he did it and he succeeded in his mission.  Even today, Christian Bale weight loss is still talked about, almost a decade after it happened.  Perhaps the extremes that he reached were historic especially considering the fact that he literally starved himself on his own volition to achieve this feat.

  1. i dont see wut the big deal is. ppl during wartime are often starved for years AND they have to deal with highly stressful and worse conditions and as long as they weren’t straight up killed they often survived. the human body can handle more than the media has led us to believe. all this health conscious malarkey is just blubber society had created so doctors can have jobs and health magazines can have things to write about.

  2. I agree. My grandparents on my mom side from eastern Europe were starved for 25 years. Eating bread and water. No veggies, no protein. Grandpa half his life looked like Bale in Machinist yet lived to be 91. It is well proven that if you starve, you will live longer as the cells in your body do not divide while starving and each cell can only divide so many times before the chromosomes get clipped to the end (normal human aging). Look at N Korea, most are starving with poor nutrition and they outlive us in USA. I wish i had the will power to stop my never ending weight gain.

    • While I agree that most diets are hyped and the body is often babied by doctors, please check that comment about North Korea. They do not have a greater life expectancy, starvation to the point of death is common enough to bring about cannibalism, they are not healthy, and that is an extreme that should be anathema rather than epitomized.
